Can a lottery ticket be owned by more than one person?
This is actually an interesting question, because it hinges on what you mean by “ownership”.In most US states, a lottery ticket may only be cashed in by one legal person or organization, and the amount is paid out to that person or organization. So it would seem that only one person can “own” the ticket itself. But others can certainly have a legal interest in the total amount of the winning ticket, either by creation of a formal contract or an informal agreement among the people involved. This can create some very “interesting” circumstances for taxation and income for everyone involved, particularly when the ticket is for a very large amount of money, or is paid out as an annuity rather than a lump sum (generally regarded as the best option for most people). Here’s the pertinent part of WA state’s Lottery FAQ:I won as part of a “Group Play”. Do we all claim the prize?Washington's Lottery pays only individuals or legal entities whose formation papers are consistent with WAC 315-06-120 and approved by the Director at the time of claim. It’s essential that any group winning a significantly large amount of money meet with a lawyer and a CPA to determine the best way to collect the money from the State in a way which properly benefits all group members.
What percentage of your win on a TV game show is taxed and at what rate?
In the United States, all of it is ordinary taxable income, although you may be able to offset any uncompensated expenses you incurred in connection with your appearance (ask your tax advisor for help on this). The rate will depend on how much other income you have, since the United States has a progressive tax scheme with multiple tax brackets. The IRS does not require game shows to withhold taxes on game show prizes unless the competition involved a wager. If the competition required that you wager your own money, the prize counts as “gaming winnings” (instead of a prize), is reported on Form W-2G, and is subject to mandatory withholding of 25% (in most cases).Note that because most game show prizes are reported on Form 1099-MISC and are not subject to withholding, you may need to file Form 1040-ES and make an estimated tax payment in order to avoid penalties for inadequate prepayment of tax. Consult a tax advisor for more details. You may also have to pay state income tax. If you traveled to another state for the show, you may have to pay income tax in both the state in which you competed and in your home state. Again, consult a tax advisor for more details specific to your situation.
How do tax accountants know what all is involved in someone's tax return?
Want to hear a dirty little secret?  We don't know. We can't know. First of all:  Garbage in, garbage out.The information you bring us is almost never complete. Oh, you think it is. You have your W-2 (in Canada, T-4), and your retirement plan contribution slips, and everything else you think you need. But you forgot that 1099 (T5/T3), and that other slip that "got stuck in the mail".Did you spend a few days working out-of-state?  You probably need to file a different state's non-resident tax return. But it's not shown on your W-2, so we'll never know. Then there's that little job you did for someone who paid you in cash. You didn't keep a record of it, or "forgot".Did you fix your neighbor's water faucet, and in return she baked you cookies?  That's income (yes, really). In Canada especially, there are tons of "boutique" tax credits for doing things the government wants you to - sending your kids to post-secondary school (T2202A), or hockey, or dance, or piano lessons. Did you buy a transit pass? Most people remember to claim the credit for an eco-friendly vehicle, but I've seen that missed, to0.Are you absolutely sure you got all your medical receipts? Do you know how much you were reimbursed by your insurance company?I could go on, but you get the idea.Second:  We miss stuff, tooOops. Forgot to input that slip. (and look at that shoebox above)Thankfully, not too often. We have processes to do it right the first time, and to catch it when we miss it. We have a review process,  but... we're human. The good thing is, when screw up, we don't leave a clamp or sponge inside you. Our errors are fixable, usually at very little cost, if we find it early enough.Third: It's complicatedTax law is complicated, and getting worse by the day.So lemme see. You have a US LLC, a Canadian ULC, your wife is a US citizen, you work in 3 countries, and you earn $40,000 in total. So you can only afford to pay us $12 to prepare your returns, but you want them to be perfect?Yes, I exaggerate, but sometimes you have to be "practical" about how deep you're going to go to get to the "right" answer. In my area - crossborder Canada-US tax - it's even more challenging, because we have to take two complicated, ugly systems, and try to marry them. The answers are often bad, even when they're right. We try to get it as right as we can, under the circumstances. I think we do an excellent job in our firm - better than most - because our reputation is very important. But I recognize the reality that's out there.

How was JioFi 4?
Firstly, Reliance Jio has replaced the JioFi 4 device with JioFi 5 & even JioFi 6 in some regions, so JioFi 4 may not be available for purchase anymore (except old stock at some Jio Store). Have been using this JioFi 4 device since June 2018 so here’s my brief review / feedback -Pros -Good deal at Rs. 999 from Jio Store (though it was listed online on Jio.com for Rs. 1999 when I went to purchase it). So, always visit a Jio Store to get a better deal instead of buying online from their websiteSmall form factor and lightweight, so easy to carryCan connect up to 10 devices, including laptops or phones (though small offices could use a single JioFi 4 device, speeds would drop too, though it would be cost-effective compared to wired BB)Charges fully from 0% to 100% in about 3.5 hours as it’s got 2600 mAh battery. But, it lasts almost a full work day of 8 hours for me while accessing internet on my laptop thru this deviceHas a Memory Card slot too for those who want to carry data offline or share it over WiFi / Internet with others. Handy feature which few use.Cons -Has a round and smooth design so it’s very slippery, and it’s not possible to keep it vertical so can get dropped from desk etc. oftenCharging port is right where the opening point is, for inserting SIM or MMC. Poor design. If not careful, one may break the USB charging port while opening the deviceTakes 3.5 hours to charge fully. With a 2600 mAh wish Jio had provided a 2A charger instead of a 1A chargerNo option to update / upgrade the firmware, as the device seems sourced from some Chinese manufacturer. Strangely there’s option to upgrade a firmware if downloaded offline (though even the User Manual doesn’t mention which website one needs to go download the same). Mine mentioned AM Telecom, which doesn’t seem to have a website ! So, if one buys this device, will be forever stuck on same firmware version, so with same set of issues n s/w bugs. The On/Off switch / button on the device isn’t sturdy, as within 4 months, mine has started malfunctioning. Authentic “Chinese product”Doesn’t quite connect at 4G speeds always, as Jio is an IP-only network and its speeds vary drastically from a few kbps (dial-up modems !) to 8–9 Mbps in best case scenario. Network reception & coverage of Jio is very inconsistent even at the same spot (at home, say).Don’t fall for the 4G speeds even on 3G/2G phones bullshit advt by Jio, as technically no 3G/2G phone can connect at 4G speeds. It’s like saying a Maruti 800 car will zoom at Ferrari speeds simply by having Ferrari’s tyres. Bizarre claim which hasn’t been called out by rivals so far !!Reliance Jio keeps replacing JioFi device at Jio Stores every few months so they also need to have exchange offers for old customers stuck with older versions. They only have exchange offers for 4G Data Cards of other makes of telcos like Airtel / Vodafone etc.In conclusion, the JioFi 4 device is only for those who Need mobility. I would recommend having a wired Broadband Internet connection (even a 2Mbps one) over this or any device which works on 4G/3G signals, as all TSPs in India offer poor 4G speeds but wired BB is usually more consistent.Edited 16-Mar-2019 (after visit to Jio Care yesterday)My JioFi-4 abruptly stopped charging last month so wanted it to be fixed by Jio Care (Panvel, Navi Mumbai) but was amazed to be given an estimate of Rs 650 for the ‘damaged’ charging port and replacement of internal electronic components (as it used to take over SIX HOURS to charge, until it croaked last month). Decided not to have it repaired as even a new one would cost Rs 999 and offer one year warranty as well. Will never recommend a JioFi device. Better opt for a VoLTE-capable phone which you can use with other TSP’s SIM too if & when required.
Can I pre-pay my California state taxes for 2018 in 2017 in order to take the state income tax deduction?
I don’t believe you can. In order for you to get a state income tax deduction on your itemized deductions (Schedule A), it needs to be paid in 2017 for the tax years 2016 or 2017.However, for your own peace of mind, please read what the instructions for Schedule A says:Line 5: State and Local Income TaxesIf you elect to deduct state and local income taxes, you must check box a on line 5. Include on this line the state and local income taxes listed next.State and local income taxes withheld from your salary during 2017. Your Form(s) W-2 will show these amounts. Forms W-2G, 1099-G, 1099-R, and 1099-MISC may also show state and local income taxes withheld.State and local income taxes paid in 2017 for a prior year, such as taxes paid with your 2016 state or local income tax return. Don't include penalties or interest.State and local estimated tax payments made during 2017, including any part of a prior year refund that you chose to have credited to your 2017 state or local income taxes.Mandatory contributions you made to the California, New Jersey, or New York Nonoccupational Disability Benefit Fund, Rhode Island Temporary Disability Benefit Fund, or Washington State Supplemental Workmen's Compensation Fund.Mandatory contributions to the Alaska, California, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania state unemployment fund.Mandatory contributions to state family leave programs, such as the New Jersey Family Leave Insurance (FLI) program and the California Paid Family Leave program.Don't reduce your deduction by any:State or local income tax refund or credit you expect to receive for 2017, orRefund of, or credit for, prior year state and local income taxes you actually received in 2017. Have you had a slot machine break right as you won the jackpot?
Nice doubt, to make you understand everything I have included an article in detail here. Find some time to check it out. It’s the dream of every slot player: Slide money into the machine, press the button, (or pull the handle if you’re an old school player), and watch the symbols line up. Winner. Winner. Winner! Suddenly you realize you’ve just won a big jackpot. You hit it really big. It could be a life-changing moment if the prize is hefty enough. “About 12 years ago a group of ladies came in to play and brought a friend whose husband had passed away,” recalled Johnny Barrientoz, director of slots who oversees some 1,430 machines at both Turtle Creek Casino and Leelanau Sands Casino. “They just wanted to take their friend out to have some fun, take her mind off her troubles.”It was the widow’s first-ever visit to a casino. She felt out of place, but was willing to try her hand at a slot machine. She sat down and slipped $20 into a progressive Wheel of Fortune machine. On her very first pull ever, she won the $330,000-plus jackpot.  “It changed her perspective,” recalled Barrientoz. “It just goes to show, it’s timing and luck.” Kalkaska resident Jennifer Guggisberg was celebrating the July 4 holiday by playing a 10-cent Quick Hits game at Turtle Creek when she hit for $4,638.“All of a sudden all of these Quick Hit symbols came up,” she said. “I didn’t realize what I won at first. Then I got excited. You’d think I won a million dollars!”Guggisberg quickly made plans for a family trip to Florida next April. Two days later, on a Friday night, she returned and won another $2,200. Then her fiancé went back two days after that and hit for $5,400 on another Quick Hit machine, right next to the one that originally paid off for Guggisberg. On July 10, Jacquelyn Williams was at Turtle Creek with her mother and playing a Life of Luxury machine for the first time when her 60 cents resulted in a $6,358 jackpot. “I had only been there 20 minutes or so,” said the Bay City resident. ”I picked a gem, and I didn’t know what was happening. The machine just kept adding up the money. It was just a very lucky moment.” The win means Williams will be planning a spring trip to Italy to see her son who is stationed there in the U.S. Air Force.  And recently a Turtle Creek guest was playing a 100-Play Video Poker machine when he was dealt a Royal Flush. The payout for the 100 Royals was $100,000, according to Barrientoz. But before you mentally start spending your next slot machine windfall, here are a few things you should know: First, once you spin and win, no need to flag down an attendant. A casino employee will quickly find you. At Turtle Creek, a new automated system sends a signal to an iPod carried by each slot attendant, who will check the machine, making sure it’s working properly, and that your win wasn’t the result of a machine malfunction. If it is a malfunction, you still get the money right? No. Most machines carry discrete labeling that says “Malfunctions void all pays,” which protects the casino. The attendant will then verify your identification. You won’t get a penny unless you show a valid ID. But once you show your ID, you’ll get your hand filled with bills. If your win is $1,200 or more, you’ll need to fill out a federal income tax form. Yes, the IRS gets a cut. You have to pay federal tax on all of your winnings and the casino will issue you a W-2G form, an IRS document specifically designed for certain gambling winnings. If you’re a casino regular, you can deduct the money you spent while chasing that jackpot, provided, of course, that you kept records of your wins and losses. You can have the tax bite taken out at that time or pay later. “About 20 percent of our big winners have the taxes taken out at the time,” said Barrientoz. “It’s at the discretion of the guest.”At Turtle Creek, if the jackpot is more than $25,000, the casino will issue a check. And in certain situations, the casino will offer the winner a free room and a dinner while employees process the appropriate paperwork. After all, if you have a free meal and all that freshly won cash, there’s a good chance you may keep playing. That’s what the casino is hoping. If you do decide to leave, most will happily have their security team to escort you to your car. If you’re one of the very rare players who wins more than $1 million, you have options. Many casinos will offer either a cash payout or an annual fixed sum. You usually have 90 days to make your choice. For some large progressive jackpots, it can take hours. Sometimes it’s out of the casino’s hands, since some payouts — like the Megabucks in Nevada — are handled by game manufacturers. You could have to wait days or weeks for your money. If you’re only won a few thousand dollars (still pretty good), you’ll get the money quicker. But don’t stress if it takes longer. The casino is not trying to get out of paying you. It’s a good time to grab a meal at a casino eatery, relax, and contemplate your good fortune. After all, if your lucky slot machine has 64 stops on each reel. Your chances of hitting the biggest jackpot would be 1 in 262,144, and many machines have far more than 64 stops per reel.  THE COMPETITORManton resident Kathy Duranso finished in first place in the 2017 Turtle Creek Casino Tourn Event in October, winning $2,500 and a trip for two to Las Vegas to compete in the national tourney.  Duranso had never been on a plane before, let alone outside Michigan. She and her boyfriend Dan stayed at the elegant Wynn hotel-casino.  “I felt like I already won,” said Duranso, who met actors George Hamilton and Danny Trejo during the trip.  There were some 175 other players from 90 casinos taking part in the national event. Playing in the tourney’s first session, Duranso did well, advancing to the second round. Cheered on by some Turtle Creek staff who flew out to see her, Duranso placed in the top 14 players, taking home $5,000 in cash, enough to pay off her house and buy winter coats and boots for her grandchildren.
Is it difficult to weld underwater?
Since the other answers posted are not of particularly high quality (sorry guys), I am going to provide some correct information. Answering this question requires a definition of your operative word “difficult”. Should your question be “is it difficult to produce a high-quality weld underwater, capable of passing X-ray or other NDT examination to a rigorous procedure such as API, AWS, ASME and so on?”, well, then the answer is most certainly YES. This is very difficult and I will explain in more detail in just a moment. Now, should your question be “is it difficult to satisfactorily join two pieces of steel together underwater, to a reasonable standard of quality?” then the answer is NO. Again, I will explain.Back when I was a commercial diver and manager, I spent a great deal of time and energy on underwater welding and getting my crews well trained in its use. I set up an indoor training tank with excessive filtration for training and practice of wet welding and cutting. In addition, my team and I designed and constructed several hyperbaric habitats for dry welding of submerged pipelines. Most of this energy was, unfortunately, somewhat misdirected. The reason it was misdirected, is that very little underwater welding actually occurs in the field and the revenue generated generally does not offset the expense of training and maintaining readiness. As stated in another answer, there are generally two types of methods used for welding underwater. They are as follows:Shielded Metal Arc Welding, or SMAW - This uses the well-known arc welding rod which consists of filler metal rod covered in a hard flux that melts and shields the weld puddle. Minor differences between U/W welding and surface welding is that the rod is generally dipped in a wax or waterproof coating and we generally use a positive ground (helps keep you from being electrocuted).Dry Habitat Weld - In this case, we use a chamber that surrounds the area to be welded that allows the area to be dried out, then the weld can be completed by various different weld procedures in the dry. In very shallow water (say, less than 1ATW or 33ft), some habitats can be operated in atmospheric mode (the same pressure as the surface). At deeper depths, we use hyperbaric habitats which are internally pressurized to the same depth as the surrounding water. In this scenario, the diver enters through the bottom and the habitat is generally filled with an inert gas.As to difficulty, well, I taught my then 16-year-old son to wet weld competently in the 1G, 2G, and 3G positions in less than 1 days time. The weld beads were nicely formed with good tie-in, and they passed a low-pressure test for leaks. As to an individual persons ability to master the technique, well that depends. I have seen some guys pick up the technique rapidly while others struggle endlessly. It is often said that it is easier to teach a welder to dive than it is a diver to weld. When we get into dry habitat welding, life takes on a whole new world of complexity. Imagine needing to deploy a multi-ton massive steel habitat underwater with all of the support equipment necessary. This is difficult enough in inland operations, but when you go offshore it takes on a much greater level of logistical complexity. Now you need a ship or barge, cranes and operators, vessel handlers, riggers, tenders and divers to set the habitat, inspection protocol, and personnel, not to mention a great deal of specialized equipment. This operation is very expensive and routinely costs millions of dollars. When you get into this category, welds are completed by professional welders that are also diver’s, or at least marginally so. Many professional welders that cannot dive have been dressed out and lead by the hand to the habitat by qualified divers. When you get into welds costing a million dollars or more, it is easier to use a qualified welder than it is to teach a diver. So, why is it so complex to complete high-quality welds underwater? There are many issues that impact weld quality U/W, but let's just look at the top three. First, we have the rapid cooling of the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) by the surrounding water. Second, we have elevated pressure. When you go deeper, the pressure increases and this compresses the inert gas shield cause by the melting flux on the rod. Lastly, you often have reduced visibility. Yes, movies show crystal clear water and sometimes it can be like that. More often, however, it becomes difficult to see your hand in front of your face.In Summation - While the possibility of electrocution is always present, it is not really that big of a deal. I have had many tingles through my gloves as well as tingles through the nose block on my hat, but nothing more. I have never known of anyone killed or seriously injured from U/W welding due to electrocution. Sure, I have heard some stories but none with names or from guys that were actually there. The number one rule is “never turn your back on your ground while the circuit is hot”. Short of some tacks while mud diving or doing salvage and repair, there just is not that much U/W welding done that does not have a mountain of logistics and integrated safety procedures. It's just not that dangerous. As to difficulty? The most difficult part of being able to complete U/W welds is finding a client that is willing to pay for the logistics.
